Spring Walk June 2019 Beverley and York, 6/06/2019 - 10/06/2019

Thursday 6th June.

Travel day, Andy picked up Dick, Paul and Ralph driving to Grahams where we met Ian. Paul went into Ian’s car so the load was shared between cars. We arranged to meet at the White Swan in Barton-upon-Humber, just south of the Humber Bridge for lunch meeting Pete there who had travelled there on his own.

After light refreshments and sustenance it was off for a walk round Waters Edge Wildlife Park walking along the Humber and underneath the Humber Bridge. A pleasant stroll in fine but windy weather then back to the cars to finish our journey to Beverley YHA where we met Phil who had travelled by train. We had originally planned to stay at Beverley YHA for the four nights but the hostel had been double booked so we moved to York YHA for two nights (Friday and Saturday) returning to Beverley YHA on Sunday for the last night.

Once settled in our accommodation we went on into town in search of food and a screen with the football on (England was playing Netherlands). We ended up in the Green Dragon which had a good selection of ales but the food was like England’s performance mediocre. During the game Ralph offered someone a spare seat, in demonstrating its position; he sent his pint flying soaking Andy and his phone needless to say the person declined Ralphs offer after seeing his actions.

Friday 7th June.

We woke up to a fine sunny morning which turned to cloud and rain later in the day. Ben arrived as we were leaving for breakfast which was taken at the Cross Keys a Wetherspoons pub, before returning to the hostel to pack up and move on to York via our planned walk for the day.

We drove to Market Weighton (home of the giant man) for a circular walk around the town. There were several places chosen to park depending on the length of walk to be undertaken. The walk involved down on Yorkshire Wolds Way out across Weighton Clay Field (also Wilberforce Way), Towthorpe Grange, alongside Towthorpe Beck, up Intake Hill on the road for a short distance before turning off at Nurseries across the Deer Park towards Londesborough then turning sharply on the Yorkshire Wolds Way to cut across the lake. Here we saw thousands of tadpoles in the water from the bridge as we crossed it. Then down to Towthorpe Lane crossing it by the picnic area on to Goodmanham where we took lunch at The Goodmanham Arms which served very good food and drink. After refreshment it was down the road through the village to the Hudson Way and back to the cars to travel on to York. As we drove to York it started to rain becoming more persistent as the day passed.

Once settled in our accommodation, washed and changed we went into York for dinner travelling by bus as it was raining heavily. Whilst on the bus John said he knew someone who ran a pub in York, so after establishing the name and whereabouts of said pub we arrange to call in and sample their fare, suddenly John had an Eureka moment, it was not in York but in Chester, so we gave up on that one carrying on with our original plan. We went to The Last Drop Inn (York Brewery) ate in the Eagle and Child before having a nightcap in The Lamb and Lion before getting the bus back.

Saturday 8th June.

After a hostel breakfast we made a quick getaway as the forecast for the day was not good driving to Millington for a circular walk. Apart from Pete and Phil who went train spotting at the National Railway Museum.

Once parked up in Millington we walked through the village and took the Minster Way by Wan Dale to join The Wolds Way by Warren Farm (quite a climb) we carried along The Wolds Way/Minster Way as far as Nettle Dale here it started to rain so we donned waterproofs. Dick, Ian and Paul turned back here to walk along the road to Millington the rest carried on for a bit before returning back to Millington again via the road from Nettle Dale. When Dick, Ian and Paul got back into the village it was a bit early to go straight to the Inn so they had coffee in the Ramblers Rest tea room, sitting outside to start with as it had only been a brief but heavy shower earlier but going inside later as it started to rain again. As they left the tea rooms the others came down the road so all went to The Gait Inn, a fine establishment with good food and ale.

After lunch it was back to the hostel. Once washed and changed some walked into York along the river to find a pub with the cricket on, others got the bus in, meeting at the Old White Swan where Paul ate. Dick went back round the corner for fish and chips and the others went for an Indian all was good apart from Paul’s which was only average. Paul and Dick walked back to the Hostel the others went to The Blue Bell and The Golden Fleece before returning on the bus.

Sunday 9th June.

After a hostel breakfast we packed our bags and loaded the cars up again as we had to go back to Beverley. We planned a walk from Huggate to Thixendale. All drove to Huggate apart from John who drove to Thixendale to leave his car there. Once Andy had dropped his passengers off he went to get John so that there was a car to take the drivers back to their cars after the walk.

The weather was good in the morning with sunshine though it did cloud over later staying fine until the evening when it rained, quite heavy at times. The walk was through the village to meet the Yorkshire Wolds Way up along Holm Dale past Glebe Farm into Fridaythorpe (highest village on Yorkshire Wolds Way). After a tea break with no tea shop it was through the village past Vicarage Farm, Wolds Way, Cowdale Leys, Gill’s Farm, Thixen Dale and up into the village of Thixendale to the Cross Keys for lunch. After lunch John took his leave as he had to work on Monday the rest of us made our way back to Beverley. Once back in Beverley, as the hostel was not open Dick, Andy, Ben and Ralph went to the Green Dragon to watch football and cricket with a glass or two of lemonade!! The others went to a café also listening to the football. Dick, Andy, Ben and Ralph met the others in the Monks Walk on their way back to the hostel(they had stayed until the cricket had finished) as the rest were going for dinner in an Italian restaurant before moving on to the White Horse, a very unusual place with lots of small rooms all lit by gas lamps.

Dick, Andy, Ben and Ralph had one with the rest then went back to the hostel to put their gear in the room and make their beds before going to Wetherspoons for food as it was getting late. Once they had eaten they made their way back to the hostel too full to go anywhere else.

Monday 10th June.

Travel day. Rather than go anywhere else on the way home for a walk it was decided to have a look round Beverley as we had not seen much of it during our stay. After breakfast we packed our bags and put them in the cars then went for a walk round the town centre taking in Beverley Minster, St Mary’s Church and The White Horse. Here Dick shocked Ralph by saying did he want his pint as he could not manage it, luckily Ralph was sitting down so no mishaps occurred. Then back to the cars to drive home. It had started out overcast in the morning with light rain as the morning progressed by the time we were on the road this became heavy, not good for the drivers but all made it home safely.

Another good walk a great place to visit.
